Countless things have been said about love in all of its dizzying permutations but The Stolen Moan’s latest single, Falling Into, focuses us on the foggy crossroads where swirling sparks of new love bump against the slightly more substantial self-perseverance of one’s heart.

Since love can often feel like getting flung into a frenzied madness, Falling Into begins with a softly-sneaking but rapidly tension building sonic moment created by driving a theremin through bit-crunching FX, sounding like the result of a vulcan mind-meld between Brian Wilson & Brian Eno, to catapult us into the main theme of the song where melodic guitars dance over driving drums to craft a track that shimmers with 70’s Bowie-esque rock ferocity that stands toe-to-toe with the surprisingly pop vocals to craft a listening experience of starry-eyed madness.

Falling Into is awash with lush vocal harmonies that map out the trials and tribulations experienced during the adventure of a new relationship. Lyrically, The Stolen Moans explore the addicting intoxication and lingering turmoil of intense romantic entanglements in all its flowing forms. The choruses plunge you into the overwhelming euphoria of getting lost in another being, while the lyrics weave the eternal debate between our unconscious desires and inner voice of reason. In classic Freudian terms, angelic Superego vs devilish Id. The track constantly keeps you on your toes with the layering of sumptuous auditory surprises, cellos echoing the main refrain, and more ethereal theremin all working in harmony to thrust you over the edge, and into the ultimate release.

On the surface, you might think The Stolen Moan’s punk credentials have taken a hit with this deviation into pop-rock power ballad-ness but is there truly anything more punk rock than letting go of all your fears and blindly falling into love? As we approach another Valentine’s day under the weight of Covid restrictions, we detour into all the euphoric highs and despondent lows … of this thing called love.
